PM Modi Says Canada PM’s Visit Has Set Path For Renewed Bilateral Cooperation
PM Modi says the Canadian PM’s visit has built a strong foundation for renewed cooperation and shared prosperity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the recent official visit by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has laid a “strong foundation for a truly renewed partnership” between India and Canada, signaling a fresh chapter in bilateral relations after years of stalemate and diplomatic strains. Modi’s remarks came in response to a social media post by Carney summarizing key moments from his trip, which ran from February 27 to March 2, 2026.
In a post on X, Modi echoed Carney’s sentiment, saying Carney’s visit has set the stage for deeper cooperation between the two nations. “I look forward to working together with you to build a future defined by trust, growth, innovation and shared prosperity for the people of our nations,” he wrote, underscoring optimism about expanding ties after a period of diplomatic chill.
The visit marked Canadian Prime Minister Carney’s first trip to India since taking office and the first bilateral visit by a Canadian head of government in nearly eight years. It featured high‑level talks on a range of issues, from energy security and critical minerals to defence, technology, and climate cooperation — areas both sides have identified as pillars of a renewed strategic partnership.

Key agreements reached during the visit included long‑term arrangements on uranium supplies and cooperation on critical minerals that are essential to clean energy and industrial applications. India and Canada also agreed to pursue a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with the goal of significantly increasing bilateral trade in the years ahead.
Beyond economic and energy cooperation, the two governments pledged to deepen collaboration in defence, education, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and other emerging sectors. Carney’s delegation included top business and innovation leaders from Canada, and both sides emphasized the potential for increased investment and talent exchanges.
Analysts view the visit as part of a broader reset in India‑Canada ties following tensions over allegations in 2023 that had strained diplomatic engagement. The renewed focus on constructive dialogue and shared interests signals an effort by both capitals to move beyond past disputes and build a forward‑looking partnership that benefits their economies and citizens.
