PM Modi And PM Albanese Seal Uranium, Defence Deals To Strengthen India-Australia Partnership
India and Australia deepen ties with uranium and defence deals.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese on Thursday announced a series of agreements aimed at strengthening India-Australia ties, including a key arrangement on uranium supply and expanded cooperation in defence, security and clean energy. The announcements were made during Modi’s visit to Australia and the conclusion of the Third Australia-India Annual Summit. Addressing a joint press conference with Albanese, Modi said the agreement on nuclear energy cooperation would enable the supply of uranium from Australia to India.
The arrangement will facilitate uranium exports under the 2015 Australia-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, marking an important step in deepening energy collaboration between the two countries. The uranium supply agreement is expected to support India’s growing focus on nuclear energy as part of its broader strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on conventional fuels. Australia, which holds some of the world’s largest uranium reserves, has been working with India to expand cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Along with the nuclear energy agreement, the two leaders announced a broader framework to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors, including defence, security, trade, critical technologies, education and global governance. The agreements reflect the growing strategic partnership between the two countries amid changing geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. Modi and Albanese also highlighted the importance of stronger defence and security cooperation between India and Australia.
Both countries have increased military engagement in recent years through joint exercises, information sharing and collaboration as part of efforts to maintain regional stability. At the summit, India and Australia also reiterated their commitment to a free, open, rules-based and peaceful Indo-Pacific region. The two leaders, who are partners in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, emphasised the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation, stability and international law in the region.
“We also firmly believe that the resolution of tensions and wars raging in various parts of the world is possible only through dialogue and diplomacy,” Modi said. He added that both countries would continue working together to strengthen peace, stability and a rules-based order across the Indo-Pacific. The summit marked another step in the expanding India-Australia relationship, which has grown significantly in areas such as trade, defence, education and technology. Both nations have sought to build closer ties through agreements aimed at improving economic cooperation and addressing shared regional challenges.
Albanese said the latest agreements demonstrated the depth of the partnership between the two countries and highlighted opportunities for future collaboration. The leaders expressed confidence that increased cooperation would benefit both nations while contributing to stability and prosperity in the wider region. The latest announcements come as India and Australia continue efforts to strengthen their strategic partnership through regular high-level meetings and sector-specific cooperation. The focus on nuclear energy, defence and emerging technologies is expected to remain central to bilateral engagement in the coming years.
