Netanyahu Nominates Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize during White House Dinner

Netanyahu’s Nobel Nod to Trump Sparks Debate Amid Gaza Ceasefire Talks

On July 7, 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize during a private White House dinner, presenting him with a nomination letter.

Netanyahu praised Trump’s “leadership of a just cause,” citing his role in forging the Abraham Accords, which normalized ties between Israel and several Arab nations, and his efforts to broker peace across the Middle East. “He’s forging peace as we speak, in one country, one region after another,” Netanyahu said, emphasizing Trump’s recent push for a 60-day Gaza ceasefire and hostage-release deal. Trump, caught off-guard, called the nomination “very meaningful.”

The announcement comes amid heightened U.S.-Israel coordination, including joint strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last month, which Trump claimed “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Netanyahu also hailed Trump’s team, including envoy Steve Witkoff, as “extraordinary” for advancing peace talks. However, the nomination has stirred controversy, with critics on X questioning its timing, given Israel’s ongoing Gaza conflict and Trump’s support for it.

Some labeled it a “quid pro quo” for U.S. military aid. The dinner, attended by top aides like Marco Rubio, also addressed expanding the Abraham Accords, with potential Saudi involvement. While Trump pushes for peace, skepticism persists about a lasting Gaza resolution, as Hamas and Israel remain at odds. The nomination, though symbolic, underscores Trump’s diplomatic ambitions but faces scrutiny over its motives.
