Monte Carlo Masters: Stage Set for Thrilling Semis
Alcaraz makes a spirited comeback in quarters
The Monte Carlo Masters 2025 delivered some pulsating tennis yesterday, but none better than the one involving the second seed Carlos Alcaraz.
The Spaniard showcased his resilience in a gripping three-setter against French rising star Arthur Fils. After dropping the first set 4-6, Alcaraz clawed his way back to win 7-5, 6-3. The robust Alcaraz saved three crucial break points in the second set, turning the tide in his favour. Alcaraz's victory secured him a semi-final spot against compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Fokina, a former runner-up at Monte Carlo, displayed composure and precision to defeat Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2. The Spaniard dominated the match, committing only 13 unforced errors compared to Popyrin's 31. His return to the semi-finals marks a significant milestone in his 2025 campaign.
In a major upset, Italy's Lorenzo Musetti overcame three-time Monte Carlo champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. After losing the first set 1-6, Musetti rallied to win 6-3, 6-4, securing his first victory over the Greek in six attempts. The win propels Musetti into the semi-finals, where he will face Alex de Minaur.
The Australian de Minaur delivered a masterclass, dismantling Grigor Dimitrov 6-0, 6-0 in just 45 minutes. The rare 'double bagel' victory highlighted de Minaur's dominance and Dimitrov's struggles, as the Bulgarian managed only one winner throughout the match.
The Alcaraz vs Fokina should be an interesting clash of Spaniards. Fokina will seek redemption after his 2022 runner-up finish. Alcaraz, who has had an uneven season, has a good chance of imposing his form back again and get him ready for Roland Garros, the acme of clay court championships. With main stars all defeated in the tournament, Alcaraz looks a firm favourite.
The Musetti vs de Minaur match will be a case of flair meets consistency.
