Mohammed Shami Defends T20 Record, 130 Wickets In Last Five Years

Shami defends T20 record, 130 wickets last years.

Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami hit back at his critics on Wednesday, responding to ongoing debates about his role in T20 cricket despite a stellar five‑year record in international cricket. Shami, who has taken 130 wickets across formats in the last five to six years, expressed frustration at suggestions that he is not suited for the shortest format of the game.

The Indian pacer, speaking ahead of Punjab Kings’ next IPL 2026 fixture, stated, “People say I’m not a T20 bowler, but numbers speak for themselves. Over 130 wickets in five to six years, and I’ve contributed in all formats. Cricket is about adapting, and I’ve done that consistently.” His remarks came amid social media chatter questioning his effectiveness in the fast‑paced T20 format, particularly in powerplay overs.

Shami’s IPL performances have often been scrutinised, given the league’s high-pressure environment and the emphasis on economy rates in addition to wicket-taking. Analysts note, however, that his ability to swing the ball and execute yorkers makes him a reliable death-over bowler, and his recent outings for Punjab Kings reflect a return to form, bolstering the team’s bowling lineup.

The bowler also highlighted the importance of consistency across formats, pointing out that adapting to T20 does not diminish achievements in Tests or ODIs. “It’s about contributing to the team, whatever the format. Critics sometimes forget that. I focus on what I can control,” Shami added, stressing professionalism and team commitment.

Fans and former cricketers have rallied behind Shami on social media, with many citing his consistency in wickets and match-winning spells as evidence that he remains one of India’s premier pacers. Supporters have also pointed out that the fast bowler has been instrumental in several IPL victories for Punjab Kings, reinforcing his status as a multi-format asset.

As the IPL 2026 season continues, Shami appears determined to let his performance on the field answer his critics, while also mentoring younger bowlers in the franchise setup. His candid response underscores the ongoing debate over the role of traditional fast bowlers in the evolving T20 landscape, where adaptability and statistical performance remain under constant scrutiny.
