Messi to Lead Argentina Against Guatemala in World Cup Warm-Up After Finalissima Cancellation

Messi leads Argentina against Guatemala after the Finalissima cancellation due to the West Asian conflict.

Lionel Messi is set to lead the Argentina national football team in an international friendly against the Guatemala national football team on March 31 as part of preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The match will be played at the iconic La Bombonera stadium and is seen as a key step in Argentina’s build-up as they aim to defend their world title.

The fixture was arranged after the scheduled Finalissima clash between Argentina and the Spanish national football team, originally set for March 27 in Qatar, was called off due to ongoing conflict in West Asia. The cancellation forced Argentine authorities to quickly organise an alternative match to ensure the team maintains momentum ahead of the global tournament.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni has made several adjustments to the squad, leaving out key players due to fitness concerns. Striker Lautaro Martínez, defender Lisandro Martínez, and midfielder Giovani Lo Celso have all been omitted as they continue recovery from injuries.

In their absence, new faces have been brought into the squad, including Estudiantes defender Tomás Palacios and Racing Club full-back Gabriel Rojas, both earning their first senior call-ups. Additionally, José Manuel López has been included as a replacement option, while Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni also features despite being under scrutiny for alleged off-field controversy.

Argentina, a three-time World Cup champion, will use the friendly to fine-tune combinations and assess squad depth ahead of the tournament. The match provides an opportunity for fringe players to stake a claim while allowing senior figures like Messi to lead preparations and maintain competitive rhythm.

The team has been drawn into a group alongside the Algeria national football team, the Austria national football team, and the Jordan national football team for the upcoming World Cup. With preparations intensifying, Argentina will look to build form and cohesion as they aim to successfully defend their title on the global stage.
