Manchester City Ready to Ramp up Pressure on Arsenal in Premier League Title Hunt

Manchester City aim to close the gap on Arsenal to three points, while pressure rises on Tottenham and Newcastle managers.

Manchester City have the opportunity to inject fresh drama into the Premier League title race when they host Fulham on Wednesday, with a win set to cut Arsenal’s lead at the top to just three points. The midweek fixtures come at a crucial stage of the season, with pressure also mounting on Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank and Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe as both clubs struggle in the bottom half of the table.

Arsenal remain favourites for their first league title in 22 years, but City’s dramatic late comeback victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday has reignited belief in Pep Guardiola’s camp. The win not only damaged Liverpool’s hopes of Champions League qualification but also underscored City’s reputation for finishing seasons strongly. However, Guardiola’s side have managed just two league wins in seven matches in 2026, raising questions over consistency despite their pedigree.

City forward Erling Haaland admitted the title race had appeared nearly over before the Anfield turnaround and stressed the need for renewed belief. While the Norwegian remains the Premier League’s leading scorer, his recent form has dipped, with only one open-play goal in his last 13 appearances. A favourable run of fixtures before Arsenal visit the Etihad Stadium in mid-April could prove decisive in testing the Gunners’ resolve.

Arsenal, meanwhile, face a tricky away trip to Brentford on Thursday. Mikel Arteta’s side have recovered from a January wobble with four consecutive wins across competitions, but Brentford’s strong home record—just two defeats all season—presents a significant challenge. The match could have major implications for the title race if City capitalise a day earlier.

Elsewhere, Liverpool travel to Sunderland in a difficult fixture that threatens to further derail their campaign. Last season’s champions sit four points outside the top five and are dealing with injuries and suspensions, including the absence of Dominik Szoboszlai. With rivals facing comparatively easier fixtures, Liverpool risk falling further behind in the race for European qualification.

At the lower end of the table, Tottenham and Newcastle meet in north London under intense scrutiny. Spurs sit just six points above the relegation zone, prompting Frank to describe his side as “desperate”. While Howe remains a respected figure at Newcastle after recent successes, speculation over his future persists, adding further intrigue to a pivotal round of Premier League matches.
