Mamata Moves to Uttarkanya After Network Failure at Bungalow

CM shifts to Uttarkanya to monitor Nepal crisis.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was forced to relocate her accommodation during a three-day administrative tour of north Bengal due to severe mobile connectivity issues at the Kanyashree bungalow. On September 9, 2025, Banerjee moved to Uttarkanya, the temporary state secretariat in Siliguri, to maintain communication and closely monitor the escalating unrest in neighboring Nepal, a senior official confirmed.

The network glitch at Kanyashree bungalow hindered the Chief Minister’s ability to stay updated on critical developments in Nepal, where riots have sparked regional concern. “The connectivity issues made it challenging for her to track the situation, so she shifted to Uttarkanya on Tuesday night for better access,” the official told PTI. Uttarkanya, home to the North Bengal Development Department, offered a more reliable communication setup.

The Trinamool Congress shared a photo on X of Banerjee working late into the night at Uttarkanya, emphasizing her commitment to vigilance. “Placing the interests of the state above all, our compassionate Chief Minister remained at Uttar Kanya State Secretariat, personally monitoring every detail,” the party posted, highlighting her focus on the Nepal crisis.

Before departing for north Bengal, Banerjee addressed the unrest in Nepal at Kolkata airport on September 9. “We love Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. I urge residents of Siliguri, Kalimpong, and areas near the Nepal border to maintain peace. Let Nepal return to normal. We cannot interfere,” she said, stressing non-intervention while expressing solidarity with the neighboring nation.

The unexpected shift underscores the challenges of maintaining connectivity in remote areas and highlights Banerjee’s hands-on approach to governance amid regional tensions. As the situation in Nepal unfolds, her administration remains on high alert, with Uttarkanya serving as a strategic base for monitoring developments.
