Maharaj Credits Ganguly For Capitals' Strong Team Culture

Pretoria Capitals captain Keshav Maharaj has praised former India captain Sourav Ganguly for building a strong team culture during his first season as the franchise’s head coach in the SA20 competition. Ganguly guided the Capitals to the final, where they narrowly missed out on their maiden title after suffering a six-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Maharaj credited the coach with creating an environment that encouraged players to work together and remain connected throughout the tournament.

Maharaj said developing the right atmosphere within a squad was particularly important in franchise competitions, where players from different countries and domestic teams come together for a limited period. He described Ganguly as “amazing” at creating that culture and said the players supported the collective objectives established by the team management. The captain’s remarks indicated that Ganguly’s impact extended beyond tactical decisions and included strengthening communication and relationships among members of the squad.

According to Maharaj, the Capitals players frequently spent time together even when they were not competing. They gathered in the team room, shared meals, watched other SA20 matches and discussed cricket. Such interactions helped players analyse their opponents while also creating a more unified dressing room. The approach allowed the squad to remain engaged with the tournament during rest days and provided opportunities for informal conversations about performances, strategies and the challenges they encountered during the season.

Ganguly’s appointment as head coach attracted considerable interest because of his extensive experience as a player, captain and cricket administrator. He previously led India and later served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. His first campaign in charge of the Pretoria franchise ended with the team reaching the championship match, representing a significant improvement even though the Capitals were unable to complete their title bid against the two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

The final defeat was disappointing for the Capitals, but their run demonstrated the value of the team environment developed under Ganguly and Maharaj. In a short-format league, consistent performances often depend on how quickly a group can establish trust, define roles and adapt to changing match situations. Maharaj’s assessment suggested that the Capitals succeeded in building that foundation. The franchise will aim to use the experience of reaching the final as motivation in its continuing pursuit of a first SA20 championship.
