Ladakh Launches Sports Policy 2026, Offers Scholarships And Rs 1 Crore Athlete Rewards

The Ladakh administration has approved the Ladakh Sports Policy 2026, introducing a wide-ranging framework aimed at strengthening the Union Territory's sporting ecosystem through monthly scholarships, cash incentives and long-term athlete support. Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena approved the policy on Saturday, describing it as a transformative initiative designed to help young sportspersons pursue professional careers without financial constraints. Built around the motto "Scout, Facilitate and Recognise," the policy aligns with the Centre's vision of promoting sports through initiatives such as Khelo India.

One of the policy's key provisions is the introduction of 12-month monthly scholarships for athletes who win medals at recognised international, national, state-level, National School Games and Khelo India competitions. International gold medallists will receive Rs 1 lakh per month, while national and state-level gold medallists will be awarded Rs 75,000 and Rs 10,000 per month, respectively. Silver and bronze medallists will also receive scholarships at proportionate rates. The policy further ensures that athletes progressing to higher levels of competition will automatically become eligible for enhanced financial support without losing their existing benefits.

In addition to recurring scholarships, the administration has announced one-time cash rewards ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 crore for medal winners in recognised sporting events. The policy also extends support to adventure sports by offering a one-time award of Rs 10 lakh to mountaineers from Ladakh who successfully summit peaks above 8,000 metres anywhere in the world. Special incentives have also been introduced for athletes competing in the Paralympic Games, Para Asian Games, Para Commonwealth Games, national para championships, and events for visually impaired, hearing-impaired and Special Olympics participants.

Officials said the policy was finalised after extensive consultations with athletes, coaches and other stakeholders over the past two months. During these discussions, sportspersons and their families highlighted the financial challenges associated with training, travel and participation in national and international competitions. The administration said the revised framework seeks to address these concerns by providing sustained financial assistance, improving access to infrastructure and encouraging greater participation in competitive sports across the region.

Lieutenant Governor Saxena said the Ladakh Sports Policy 2026 reflects the administration's long-term commitment to building a vibrant and self-sustaining sports culture in the Union Territory. He added that the initiative will be complemented by improved sports infrastructure, scientific coaching and career development opportunities for athletes. Emphasising that every medal won by a sportsperson from Ladakh is a matter of national pride, Saxena reaffirmed the administration's commitment to ensuring that talented athletes and their families no longer face financial hardships while striving for excellence on national and international platforms.
