Jay Shah Meets Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Discusses Cricket Development In Sri Lanka

Jay Shah reiterates support for cricket growth during Sri Lanka visit.

International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah met Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Friday and reaffirmed the ICC’s commitment to supporting the growth and development of cricket in Sri Lanka, with discussions focusing on grassroots development, youth participation, and the sport’s broader social and economic impact.

Following the meeting, Shah said the discussions centred on expanding opportunities for emerging cricketers, strengthening youth and grassroots programmes, and using cricket as a vehicle for social development. He also acknowledged Sri Lanka’s historic contribution to international cricket and expressed confidence in the country’s continued role in nurturing future generations of players.

The ICC Chairman further highlighted Sri Lanka’s importance as a host of major international cricket events and a key stakeholder in the global growth of the sport. He noted that collaboration between the ICC, national authorities, and cricket administrators would be essential in creating new opportunities and ensuring the long-term development of cricket across the island nation.

The meeting comes at a sensitive time for Sri Lankan cricket administration, amid concerns within the ICC regarding governance issues involving Sri Lanka Cricket. Questions have been raised over the appointment of an interim committee by the Sri Lankan government to oversee the affairs of the cricket board, replacing the elected administration before the completion of its term.

The interim committee, established by Sports Minister Sunil Kumar Gamage, was tasked with implementing reforms, including the drafting of a new constitution for Sri Lanka Cricket. However, the move has drawn scrutiny because ICC regulations generally require national cricket boards to remain free from direct government interference. The situation has prompted discussions about governance standards and compliance with international cricket regulations.

Despite the administrative challenges, the meeting between Shah and President Dissanayake underscored a shared commitment to strengthening cricket in Sri Lanka. Observers view the engagement as an effort to maintain stability within the sport while supporting player development, grassroots initiatives, and Sri Lanka’s continued contribution to the international cricketing landscape.
