Jaishankar Confronts Global Hypocrisy on Ukraine and Gaza Conflicts
India’s FM slams double standards, urges peace at G20 meet.
In a fiery takedown at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called out the world’s “double standards” on conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, warning that destabilizing energy, food, and fertilizer security hammers the Global South hardest. Speaking on the sidelines of UNGA80, hosted by South Africa, Jaishankar stressed that peace fuels development, but threatening economic stability—especially in a fragile global economy—torpedoes any hope for progress. “Making energy and essentials more uncertain helps no one,” he declared, urging G20 nations to champion dialogue and diplomacy over escalation.
Jaishankar didn’t mince words on terrorism, branding it a “perennial disruptor of peace” and a persistent threat to global development. “The world must show neither tolerance nor accommodation to terrorist activities,” he asserted, adding that those who combat terrorism serve the international community at large. In a post on X, he emphasized the G20’s unique responsibility to steer a volatile world toward stability, writing, “In a politically & economically volatile international situation, G20 members have a particular responsibility to strengthen its stability and give it a more positive direction.”
He spotlighted the ripple effects of ongoing conflicts, noting how Ukraine and Gaza have spiked costs and choked access to critical supplies for developing nations. “Double standards are clearly in evidence,” Jaishankar said, slamming inconsistent global responses. He also called for urgent reform of multilateral institutions like the United Nations, whose limitations are glaring amid rising conflicts, economic pressures, and terrorism. “The need to reform multilateralism has never been greater,” he observed.

Pushing for proactive solutions, Jaishankar advocated leveraging countries capable of engaging both sides in conflicts to broker peace. “The value of encouraging a buy-in from those supportive of such goals should be appreciated,” he noted, positioning India as a potential mediator in a fractured world. With G20 nations bearing the weight of stabilizing the international order, he urged a focus on diplomacy, robust anti-terrorism measures, and stronger energy and economic security to pave the way for lasting peace. As global tensions simmer, Jaishankar’s bold stance signals India’s rising voice in shaping a fairer, more stable world order.
