Iran's World Cup Team Forced Into Mexico Base Camp as US Visa Dispute Deepens

Iran's national football team arrived in the Mexican border city of Tijuana on Sunday as preparations intensify for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The squad landed after an overnight flight from Turkey, where it had spent the previous three weeks in a training camp. A small group of supporters welcomed the players at the airport before security personnel escorted the delegation to its accommodation ahead of the tournament.

The team's arrival comes amid ongoing political tensions between Iran and the United States and concerns surrounding travel arrangements for the World Cup. Iran had originally planned to establish its tournament base in Arizona but shifted operations to Tijuana following uncertainty over entry procedures and visa approvals for members of the delegation. The move was intended to ensure smoother logistics ahead of the competition.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei indicated that the prolonged uncertainty had affected the team's preparations. Speaking after arriving in Mexico, he suggested that issues beyond football had complicated the build-up to the tournament. Despite the challenges, the coaching staff and players have continued their preparations with the goal of competing at their highest level during the World Cup.

Defender Ehsan Hajsafi said the squad remained physically ready despite facing difficult circumstances in recent months. Iran will begin its Group G campaign against New Zealand near Los Angeles on June 15 before facing Belgium on June 21. The team will then conclude the group stage against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The fixtures present a challenging path for Iran as it seeks to advance beyond the group stage and make a significant impact at the tournament.

The team's participation has drawn international attention due to broader geopolitical developments involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Nevertheless, Iranian players and officials have emphasized their commitment to focusing on football.
