IPL 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Closes In On Chris Gayle’s Six-Hitting Record
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is nearing Chris Gayle’s iconic IPL sixes record.
Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stands on the verge of rewriting Indian Premier League history as the Rajasthan Royals opener prepares for the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The teenage batting sensation is now closing in on one of the league’s most iconic records — the most sixes hit in a single IPL season, currently held by Chris Gayle.
Gayle smashed 59 sixes during the 2012 IPL season, a record that has stood untouched for over a decade. Sooryavanshi has already struck 53 sixes in IPL 2026 and now requires seven more maximums to surpass the legendary West Indies batter. The Eliminator against Hyderabad could potentially be his final opportunity this season to break the milestone if Rajasthan fail to progress further in the tournament.
Despite a relatively quiet outing against Mumbai Indians in the Royals’ previous match, Sooryavanshi has enjoyed a remarkable campaign overall. The young left-hander has scored 583 runs in 14 matches at an average of 41.64 and an extraordinary strike rate of 232.67. His season includes one century and three half-centuries, establishing him as one of the most destructive batters in the competition despite his age.

The statistics underline the aggressive nature of his batting. More than 54% of Sooryavanshi’s runs this season have come through sixes, and he has been clearing the boundary at a remarkable frequency of one six every 4.7 deliveries. If he manages seven sixes against Hyderabad or in subsequent playoff matches, he would not only surpass Gayle’s IPL record but also set a new benchmark for the most sixes in a single T20 tournament overall.
Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach has become one of the defining stories of IPL 2026. Earlier in the season, he produced one of the most explosive innings in league history with a 36-ball century against Hyderabad in Jaipur. That innings further elevated comparisons between the Bihar teenager and some of T20 cricket’s greatest power hitters, including Gayle himself.
The teenager has also openly spoken about targeting even bigger records in the future. Recently, Sooryavanshi stated his ambition to surpass Gayle’s record for the highest individual score in T20 cricket and eventually score a double century in the format. As Rajasthan Royals enter a knockout clash with their season on the line, the spotlight will once again fall on the 15-year-old prodigy and his pursuit of a historic IPL milestone.
