India’s Test Team Under Fire: Gautam Gambhir Faces Criticism While Experts Call for Player Accountability
India’s Test team faces scrutiny under coach Gautam Gambhir after heavy losses.
India’s Test cricket team has been under intense scrutiny following a crushing 0-2 whitewash against South Africa, marking one of the heaviest defeats in the nation’s history. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has borne much of the blame after the team lost the second Test in Guwahati by an unprecedented margin of 408 runs, their largest-ever defeat by runs in Test cricket. This latest setback follows another home series loss to New Zealand earlier this year, raising questions about the team’s strategy and leadership under Gambhir’s guidance.
Despite mounting criticism aimed largely at the head coach’s approach, former India wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa has urged the cricket fraternity to broaden the accountability discussion to include the players themselves. Speaking on his YouTube show, Uthappa highlighted ongoing concerns over the team's fluctuating batting order, the abundance of all-rounders at the expense of specialists, and coaching methods that succeed in limited-overs cricket but may not translate effectively to the longer format. His insights shine a light on deeper structural and tactical challenges facing Indian Test cricket.
Uthappa emphasized that while Gambhir’s coaching record and team selection merit close examination, the players must also own their role in the team’s failures. He called for the batsmen, in particular, to take responsibility for their performances by adopting a more patient and situation-aware approach to Test batting—grinding innings out rather than relying on aggressive stroke play. According to Uthappa, this element of player self-reflection and improvement is conspicuously missing from the ongoing debate, which remains disproportionately focused on the coaching staff.

He concluded by urging the team’s players to publicly acknowledge their shortcomings and embrace constructive criticism as part of the path to recovery. By sharing the onus for these defeats, the team could foster a culture of accountability and resilience, both essential for future success in the demanding arena of Test cricket. The conversation initiated by Uthappa’s remarks underscores the multifaceted nature of the challenges Indian cricket faces as it seeks to rebuild confidence and competitiveness.
