India's Medal Hopes Suffer as Aman Sehrawat Disqualified from World Championship

Indian wrestler’s shock exit over weight limit violation.

Paris Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat was disqualified from the World Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, on Sunday after failing to meet the weight requirements for the men’s freestyle 57kg category. The 22-year-old, considered one of India’s brightest medal prospects, was found to be 1.7kg over the weight limit during the official weigh-in, leading to his immediate disqualification from the prestigious tournament.

The unexpected development has left the Indian wrestling contingent reeling, with sources within the team expressing shock and disappointment. “It’s deeply unfortunate and surprising that Aman couldn’t maintain his weight. Being 1700 grams over is unacceptable. We’re baffled as to how he gained so much extra weight,” a source from the Indian camp told PTI from Zagreb.

The incident has raised questions about the wrestler’s preparation, given that Aman had ample time to manage his weight during an acclimatization camp in Zagreb, where he arrived on August 25 alongside other Indian wrestlers.

Aman, who trains at the renowned Chhattrasal Stadium in Delhi—a hub that has produced wrestling icons like Sushil Kumar and Bajrang Punia—was expected to shine on the global stage following his bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics last year. His disqualification is a significant setback for India, which had pinned high hopes on the young wrestler to add to the nation’s medal tally at the World Championship.

The weigh-in controversy has sparked concerns about the rigorous weight management protocols in wrestling, where athletes often undergo extreme measures to meet strict weight categories. Missing the mark by 1.7kg is considered a substantial margin in a sport where even a few grams can make a difference. The Indian wrestling team’s coaching staff is likely to face scrutiny over how such a lapse occurred, especially for a high-profile athlete like Aman, who was in peak form leading up to the event.

Despite this setback, Aman’s journey in wrestling has been nothing short of inspiring. Hailing from a humble background, the young grappler rose to prominence with his relentless work ethic and technical prowess. His Olympic bronze was a testament to his potential, making his disqualification all the more disheartening for fans and supporters back home. The Indian wrestling community now awaits clarity on what led to this unexpected turn of events and how Aman plans to bounce back from this disappointment.

As the World Championship continues, India’s remaining wrestlers will aim to salvage the campaign, but Aman’s absence in the 57kg category leaves a void. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of competitive wrestling, where even the smallest misstep can derail months of preparation. The focus now shifts to how Aman and the Indian wrestling contingent regroup and prepare for future challenges on the global stage.
