India To Stage 2028 World Indoor Athletics Championships In Bhubaneswar
India will host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium, marking a significant milestone for the nation's growing athletics infrastructure.
The decision was announced by Athletics Federation of India president Bahadur Singh Sagoo following the World Athletics Council meeting in Torun, Poland, on March 19, 2026, where current 2026 championships are also underway. This selection came after multiple inspections of Bhubaneswar's facilities, including a January visit by World Athletics delegates who praised the venue's world-class standards. The event underscores Odisha's emergence as a sports hub, building on its successful hosting of the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships and recent continental meets.
The Kalinga Indoor Stadium, India's only dedicated indoor athletics facility, will stage the competition featuring top global athletes in sprints, jumps, throws, and middle-distance events. Just ahead of the announcement, the venue will host India's inaugural National Indoor Athletics Championships on March 24-25, 2026, serving as a key test run. Odisha's sports minister and officials highlighted seamless logistics, hospitality, and fan engagement as decisive factors in securing the bid over competitors like New Zealand.

This triumph aligns with India's broader ambitions, including a parallel bid for the 2028 World U20 Championships in Ahmedabad, positioning the country for multiple major athletics events. Adille Sumariwalla, World Athletics vice-president and former AFI chief, played a pivotal role in advocacy during site visits. The championships will draw elite competitors, boosting visibility for Indian track and field talents like Neeraj Chopra and emerging indoor specialists.
Bhubaneswar's selection reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for sports infrastructure, with the state investing heavily in upgrades post-2024 inspections. Previously hosting over 200 international athletes in last year's World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meet, the city now prepares for its biggest stage yet. Organizers anticipate massive crowds, leveraging local passion and modern amenities.
The 2028 event promises to elevate India's global athletics profile, fostering talent pipelines and inspiring youth participation nationwide. With preparations starting immediately, Bhubaneswar gears up to deliver a landmark championship, cementing its status alongside established hosts like Birmingham and Glasgow.
