Union Home Minister Amit Shah reignited India’s Olympic aspirations during the virtual inauguration of the Rs 316.82 crore Para High Performance Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Addressing the gathering, Shah boldly declared that India is resolute in its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Gujarat poised to lead the charge. He outlined ambitious plans to construct ten major stadiums at the Sardar Patel Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, stating, “India has resolved to hold the 2036 Olympic Games in these 10 complexes. Gujarat has already started preparations for this event.”
Shah’s comments underscore a strategic focus on infrastructure development, with Gujarat emerging as a frontrunner to anchor the Games. He highlighted the state’s sports budget, which has soared from Rs 2 crore in 2002 to Rs 352 crore, reflecting a robust commitment to fostering athletic talent and facilities. The new Para High Performance Centre, equipped with advanced technology, exemplifies this push, aiming to elevate India’s para-athletes onto the global stage.
While the Indian Olympic Association submitted its Letter of Intent to the International Olympic Committee in October 2024, Shah’s emphasis on Ahmedabad suggests a strong regional bid, though a multi-city approach remains under consideration. Facing competition from nations like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, India’s preparations signal intent and ambition. Shah’s vision ties the Olympic dream to national pride, positioning the 2036 Games as a milestone in India’s journey to global sporting prominence—one that Gujarat is ready to host.
