Harmanpreet Kaur Keeps Final Ball After Leading India to First Women’s World Cup Victory

Harmanpreet Kaur keeps the final ball after India’s historic 2025 Women’s World Cup win.

Indian Women’s Cricket Captain Harmanpreet Kaur has etched herself into history as the first-ever captain to lead India to a Women’s World Cup victory in 2025. Following their triumphant win against South Africa, she sportingly pocketed the match ball after taking the final catch—an unplanned gesture reminiscent of Sunil Gavaskar’s famous act in 1983 when India won their maiden Men’s World Cup.

During a recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Harmanpreet explained that keeping the ball was “God’s plan” and not premeditated. She said, “After so many years of hard work, after so many years of waiting, now I have it. I still have it in my bag.” Her act symbolized a deeply personal and emotional moment that connected two generations of Indian cricket glory.

Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar also commented on the gesture, urging Harmanpreet to gather autographs on the ball from her teammates and even the South African players, echoing the spirit of camaraderie and shared history. Gavaskar expressed, “That will be a memento she’ll cherish for life.”

Harmanpreet also thanked Prime Minister Modi for his motivational words following the 2017 World Cup final loss, crediting his encouragement as a driving force behind the team's persistent striving for success. Expressing hope for the future, she told the PM that the team aims to keep meeting and taking pictures with him, symbolizing their ongoing journey of achievement and inspiration.

This meaningful moment not only celebrates the Women in Blue but also highlights the unifying power of sport and the legacy carried forward by India’s cricketing legends.
