LeBron James continues to redefine basketball longevity, becoming the first player to score 50,000 combined points in the NBA regular season and playoffs. The 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star reached this milestone on Tuesday night with a 3-pointer in the first quarter of a 136-115 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. James finished the game with 34 points, further cementing his unparalleled legacy.
Reflecting on the achievement, James said, “That’s a lot of points. Growing up where I’m from, picking up the game as a kid, and hoping to play at the highest level—it’s pretty cool to see that.” Already the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in both regular season (over 38,387 points, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 2023) and playoffs (topping Michael Jordan’s 5,987 in 2017), James now stands alone with 50,000 combined points. Abdul-Jabbar, second on the list, trails with 44,149.
In his record-tying 22nd season, James shows no signs of slowing down. Assisted by Luka Doncic—acquired in a blockbuster trade from the Dallas Mavericks last month—he sank the milestone shot. Doncic, who posted 30 points, 15 assists, and eight rebounds, marveled, “It’s unbelievable, that 50K. He might get to 70K. You never know.” The Lakers, now 11-2 since Doncic’s arrival, are riding a seven-game winning streak and look like title contenders.
The Crypto.com Arena crowd honored James with a standing ovation, acknowledged by waves from the bench. Earlier that day, he was named Western Conference Player of the Month for February, averaging 29.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 6.9 assists—his 41st such award, an NBA record. At 40, he’s also the oldest recipient, eclipsing Karl Malone’s mark set at 37.
James’ durability is staggering: 1,548 regular-season games (second only to Robert Parish’s 1,611) and a record 287 playoff appearances. His streak of scoring at least 10 points in 1,278 consecutive games since 2007 is unmatched. As he eyes a 23rd season, James continues to rewrite the record books.
