Former India Player Criticises Team Approach After England Loss Under Gambhir

Former cricketer issues warning after India's England defeat.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has raised concerns over head coach Gautam Gambhir's tenure following India's disappointing performances in recent series, warning that the team has experienced a pattern of extreme highs and lows. Chopra's comments came after India suffered a heavy nine-wicket defeat against England in the fourth T20I, a result that handed England the five-match series victory and increased scrutiny on the Indian team's recent struggles.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra acknowledged that Gambhir's coaching period has included significant achievements, including major tournament successes and a strong run of results in T20 cricket. However, he pointed out that India's defeats under the current setup have often been severe. He described the team's performances as being either at the highest level or facing major setbacks, highlighting losses in bilateral series and major contests as examples of inconsistency.

Chopra said India's recent T20I struggles have become a concern, particularly with the team losing another series after a period of dominance. He warned that another defeat in the England series could affect India's position as the top-ranked T20I side. According to Chopra, maintaining consistency will be crucial for the team as it continues to compete at the international level under Gambhir's leadership.

The former cricketer also identified India's weakness against short-pitched bowling as a major issue exposed during the England series. He said England's fast bowlers, including Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, used a clear strategy of bowling aggressive short deliveries at high pace, which Indian batters struggled to counter. Chopra suggested that the inability to handle this tactic has repeatedly troubled India's batting lineup.

Chopra specifically mentioned young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan as examples of players who have struggled against short balls. He noted that while Sooryavanshi has shown glimpses of attacking ability, he has failed to convert promising starts into significant scores because of difficulties against the short-ball approach. Chopra's remarks highlighted the need for India to find solutions against pace and bounce as the team looks ahead to future international challenges.
