FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour Brings Global Football’s Ultimate Prize Back to India
FIFA World Cup Trophy returns to India after 12 years amid crisis.
Indian football, currently ranked 142nd in the FIFA standings and facing suspension of its domestic league due to administrative challenges, received a powerful symbol of inspiration on Friday. The original FIFA World Cup Trophy, absent from the country for over a decade, arrived as part of the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola in preparation for the 2026 tournament. The iconic trophy's presence offers fans a direct link to global football's pinnacle.
The tour commenced with a ceremonial FIFA Charter Landing before the official unveiling took place at the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi. The event drew significant attention, with Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva, a FIFA legend, in attendance. Their participation highlighted the occasion's importance in bridging international prestige with India's domestic aspirations.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Mandaviya emphasized the government's commitment to elevating sports nationwide. He stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, sports have become a key national priority. The minister linked the trophy's visit to India's long-term goal of ranking among the top five sporting nations globally by 2047.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy, made of 18-carat solid gold and weighing 6.175 kg, follows a design introduced in 1974. Strict protocol restricts physical contact to former World Cup-winning captains, heads of state, and the FIFA President, underscoring its unparalleled status. Its arrival serves as a rare opportunity for Indian enthusiasts to witness one of sport's most revered artifacts firsthand.
Despite ongoing struggles within Indian football, the trophy's tour rekindles optimism and reminds stakeholders of the sport's deeper values. It represents aspiration, resilience, and the belief that sustained effort can eventually align India's performance with the immense passion its fans continue to demonstrate.
