Deepesh Devendran Takes Five to Help India U19 Dominate Australia in Brisbane Test
Deepesh Devendran leads India U19 with brilliant 5-wicket haul in Brisbane.
India U19 seized control on the opening day of the first Youth Test against Australia U19 at Brisbane’s Ian Healy Oval, bowling out the hosts for 243 in 91.2 overs. Seventeen-year-old seamer Deepesh Devendran from Tamil Nadu led the charge with a stellar five-wicket haul (5/45 in 16.2 overs), dismantling the Australian batting lineup. Supported by Kishan Kumar’s impressive 3/48 in 16 overs, India’s disciplined bowling attack ensured they held the upper hand by the close of play.
Australia U19, opting to bat first after winning the toss, struggled to build momentum against India’s relentless bowlers. Steven Hogan waged a lone battle, scoring a patient 92 off 246 balls, but lacked support as wickets fell at regular intervals. Zed Hollick contributed 38 off 94 balls, but no other batter could anchor the innings. The absence of substantial partnerships proved costly, with India’s bowlers maintaining tight lines and lengths to exploit the hosts’ vulnerabilities.
The Indian attack struck early, reducing Australia to 30/2 with Deepesh and Kishan Kumar claiming a wicket each. Off-spinner Anmoljeet Singh further dented the hosts by dismissing Australia’s skipper Will Malajczuk (21), leaving them at 78/3 by the first session’s end. Deepesh and Khilan Patel continued the pressure, removing Hollick and wicketkeeper Simon Budge, as Australia slipped to 167/5. Deepesh’s fiery spell wrapped up the innings, handing India a commanding position.

This dominant performance follows India U19’s clean sweep in the preceding three-match Youth ODI series, where they defeated Australia by margins of 57, 51, and 167 runs under captain Ayush Mhatre. The team’s cohesive bowling and strategic approach have carried forward into the Test format, setting the stage for an exciting contest. The second Youth Test, scheduled for October 7–10 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, promises further action as India aim to maintain their dominance.
With Deepesh Devendran emerging as a standout performer and the bowling unit firing on all cylinders, India U19 have laid a strong foundation in the series opener. As the match progresses, all eyes will be on India’s batting response and whether Australia can regroup to challenge the visitors’ momentum on day two.
