Dale Steyn Fires Back at Fan Alleging “Subtle Jibes” on Team India

Dale Steyn denies subtle jibes at Team India, says he critiques fairly and praises unbiasedly.

Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn, widely regarded as one of cricket’s fiercest pacers, recently responded sharply to accusations that he had made “subtle jibes” against the Indian cricket team. Steyn, who retired after a 16-year international career, is now actively involved in commentary and shares his opinions on social media platforms, particularly X.

Steyn’s illustrious career included 93 Tests with 439 wickets, 125 ODIs claiming 196 scalps, and 47 T20Is with 64 wickets. Known for his extreme pace, ability to swing the ball both ways, and aggressive on-field demeanor, Steyn remains one of the most respected fast bowlers in modern cricket. His post-retirement insights often draw attention due to his candid and analytical style.

The controversy arose on Sunday when a fan accused Steyn of making subtle negative remarks about India. Responding directly, Steyn challenged the claim, stating, “Really? Show me one example. I pose the same question to you, show me what I’ve said that’s negative or untrue about any player or the team? You can’t.” He further emphasized that his critiques are aimed at calling out mistakes by coaches or teams rather than targeting individual players.

Steyn clarified that his commentary strives to remain unbiased and level-headed, praising players when they perform well while critiquing when necessary. “It’s not my fault if the coaches make or say the wrong things, I just call it out. That’s fair enough and also my job,” he added, underscoring the distinction between objective analysis and personal bias.

The remarks came during India’s opening T20 World Cup 2026 match against the USA at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. India secured a 29-run victory despite early setbacks, with Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 84 guiding the hosts to 161/9. The innings saw India struggle early, falling to 46/4 in the Powerplay, but recovered thanks to Yadav’s performance.

USA’s Shadley van Schalkwyk impressed with the ball, claiming 4/25, while Mohammed Siraj returned 3/29 in India’s defense. Steyn’s commentary reportedly highlighted tactical decisions and individual performances, sparking the fan debate. His response reinforces his commitment to impartial analysis and candid cricket commentary for audiences worldwide.
