CPI(M) Questions Congress Leaders’ Attendance at Tea Party With PM Modi Amid MGNREGA Row

CPI(M) has sharply criticized Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for participating in a customary tea party hosted by the government following the contentious Winter Session of Parliament. The party described the attendance as sending an inappropriate message amid allegations of the Centre forcefully amending the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas stated that the visual of the Gandhi leaders sharing tea with Prime Minister Narendra Modi diminished the Opposition's unified stance against the government's legislative approach and procedural conduct throughout the session. He emphasized that such engagement risked diluting public perception of the INDIA bloc's resistance efforts.

Brittas questioned Priyanka Gandhi's presence, noting she holds no parliamentary leadership position, and highlighted the absence of discussions on critical issues like rehabilitation funds for Wayanad. He further pointed out that Opposition parties had consistently boycotted similar events since the 2024 Monsoon Session, raising concerns over the sudden shift in approach.

Several senior leaders from other INDIA bloc constituents, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and DMK figures T R Baalu and Kanimozhi, opted not to attend, indicating internal divergence. Brittas noted the lack of prior consultation or information shared with alliance partners regarding Congress's decision.

The development has exposed underlying tensions within the Opposition coalition, with CPI(M) asserting that the participation contradicted the prevailing sentiment against engaging in cordialities immediately after a session marked by significant confrontations over key bills.
