CM Khemchand Singh Says Manipur Represents Unity And Sporting Excellence

Manipur CM highlights state as symbol of unity and sporting excellence.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Tuesday said the state represents a strong example of unity in diversity and continues to play a major role in shaping India’s sporting achievements. He made the remarks while attending the International Olympic Day Run and a tree plantation programme organised by the Manipur Olympic Association at the Olympic Bhavan in Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.

The Chief Minister highlighted that Manipur is home to 36 communities living together in harmony and said the state’s contribution to national sports is unmatched. He stated that Indian contingents at major international sporting events are incomplete without athletes from Manipur, reflecting the region’s consistent production of elite sportspersons across disciplines.

Singh also noted that the establishment of the country’s first National Sports University in Manipur is a recognition of the state’s sporting legacy. He added that the university’s infrastructure is nearing completion and said he had recently inspected the campus to review progress on development works.

Recalling his personal background as a Taekwondo practitioner, the Chief Minister said that while medals and international representation are important, the greatest value of sports lies in discipline and character-building. He urged young athletes to respect coaches and teachers, maintain unity across communities, and develop perseverance in both sports and education.

During the same event, Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh, who also holds the Youth Affairs and Sports portfolio, said India is preparing for the 2036 Olympic Games and is actively working to identify and nurture talent across states. He pointed out that Manipur, despite its relatively small population, has produced 19 Olympians, a figure he described as remarkable compared to larger states.

The Minister also raised concerns about outdated sports infrastructure and equipment in the state, noting that much of it dates back to the 1999 National Games. He informed that ₹5 crore has been proposed for new sports equipment to support athletes. The programme concluded with the Chief Minister flagging off the Olympic Day Run and participating in the tree plantation drive alongside other dignitaries and sports representatives.
