Caster Semenya Calls IOC's Reinstatement of Gender Tests a Disrespect for Women

Caster Semenya has strongly criticised the International Olympic Committee following its decision to reinstate gender verification tests for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, calling the move a “disrespect for women". The two-time Olympic 800 metres champion voiced her concerns on Sunday, expressing disappointment over the policy’s return, which has long been a subject of global debate in athletics.

Semenya, who has previously been at the centre of controversies surrounding hyperandrogenism regulations, said the decision was particularly troubling given the leadership of Kirsty Coventry, the newly appointed IOC president from Zimbabwe. She noted that the reinstatement of such tests raises serious concerns about fairness, dignity, and the treatment of female athletes, especially those from under-represented regions.

Speaking at a press conference in Cape Town on the sidelines of a sporting event, Semenya emphasised the broader implications of the policy. She highlighted how such measures disproportionately affect women from Africa and the Global South, arguing that they reinforce harmful stereotypes and systemic inequalities in international sport. According to her, the move risks undermining the progress made in promoting inclusivity and respect for women athletes worldwide.
