Brij Bhushan Singh Receives Grand Welcome After Acquittal In Sexual Harassment Case

Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh received a grand welcome from supporters on Thursday during his first visit to his home district Gonda after being acquitted in a sexual harassment case filed by wrestlers. A large number of supporters gathered along the route, showering flower petals and raising slogans in support of the former Kaiserganj Lok Sabha MP. Singh arrived at Ayodhya’s international airport aboard a chartered aircraft, where supporters welcomed him with drums, music, and celebratory slogans.

Videos from the event showed crowds gathering at the airport and along the route as Singh’s convoy moved towards Gonda, with supporters chanting phrases including “sher aaya” during the roadshow. The BJP leader was accompanied by supporters as he travelled from Ayodhya to Gonda. Thousands of people reportedly gathered along the route to welcome him, marking his first public appearance in the region after a Delhi court acquitted him in the sexual harassment case involving allegations made by women wrestlers.

Singh, who previously headed the Wrestling Federation of India, had faced allegations of sexual harassment from several wrestlers, leading to protests by athletes and a prolonged controversy in Indian wrestling administration. The allegations had triggered widespread debate over the handling of complaints against sports officials and the need for stronger mechanisms to protect athletes. A Delhi court recently acquitted Singh in the case, observing that the prosecution had failed to establish the charges against him. The verdict came after a lengthy legal process involving statements from witnesses and examination of evidence presented before the court.

Following his acquittal, Singh's supporters described the court decision as a vindication and organised a public welcome for him in his constituency. The show of support reflected his continued influence among sections of voters and party supporters in the region. The protests by prominent athletes had brought national attention to issues related to sports governance, accountability, and the safety of athletes.

Singh, a six-time former Lok Sabha member from Kaiserganj, has been a prominent political figure in Uttar Pradesh and has maintained a strong support base in the region. His return to Gonda after the court verdict was marked by a large-scale public gathering organised by his supporters. The welcome event also highlighted the political significance of Singh’s presence in the area. While his supporters celebrated the acquittal, the controversy surrounding the allegations and the legal proceedings continues to remain part of the broader conversation around accountability in Indian sports administration.
