BCCI Denies Plans to Replace Gautam Gambhir as Coach

BCCI vice-president denies plans to remove Gautam Gambhir as India's head coach.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed reports suggesting that Gautam Gambhir could be replaced as India’s Test head coach. Vice-president Rajeev Shukla clarified that there are no plans to remove Gambhir or appoint a new coach, following widespread media speculation linking former cricketer VVS Laxman to the role.

The speculation arose after India suffered a 0-2 home Test series whitewash against South Africa, marking the team’s second consecutive home series defeat in the longest format. Last year, India lost 0-3 to New Zealand, which had cost them a place in the ICC World Test Championship 2025 final. Despite these setbacks, the BCCI has reaffirmed its support for Gambhir.

Shukla stated, “I want to make it very clear regarding the speculation circulating in the media about head coach Gautam Gambhir. The BCCI secretary has also made it very clear that there is no plan to remove Gambhir or bring in a new head coach for India.” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia echoed the statement, calling the reports “factually incorrect and baseless.”

With the Test team facing challenges, India’s immediate focus has shifted to defending their T20 World Cup title under a new leadership group. Suryakumar Yadav will captain the team in the tournament starting February 7, 2026, with the campaign beginning against the USA in Mumbai. India has been placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA.

This T20 World Cup marks a significant moment for India as key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be absent for the first time in several years. The young Indian squad, which has maintained an unbeaten streak across T20I series this year, will be tested on the home stage in front of passionate fans.

Despite the recent Test losses, the BCCI remains committed to Gambhir’s coaching tenure, emphasizing continuity and stability in India’s long-term cricketing plans. Fans and experts alike will be watching closely as India transitions into a new era in both Test and T20 cricket.
