Australia Tour: PM Modi Gifts Framed Memento To Former Cricket Captain Steve Waugh
PM Modi honours Steve Waugh with special framed keepsake.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the strong sporting ties between India and Australia during a visit to the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where he met former Australian captain Steve Waugh and presented him with a specially framed photograph from nearly two decades ago, commemorating an earlier meeting when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The visit to the MCG took place on the final day of Modi's three-day trip to Australia, during which he was accompanied by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The two leaders toured the historic stadium and interacted with young cricketers, underscoring the role of sport in strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries. One of the highlights of the visit was Modi's meeting with Steve Waugh, regarded as one of Australia's most successful cricket captains. The Prime Minister gifted Waugh a framed photograph capturing their earlier meeting during Modi's tenure as Gujarat's chief minister, a gesture reflecting their longstanding association and the enduring sporting relationship between India and Australia.
During the visit, Modi also reiterated India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games and spoke about expanding cooperation with Australia in sports development. He expressed confidence that the two countries could work together in areas such as sports infrastructure, youth engagement, athlete training and talent development as both prepare to host major international sporting events in the coming years. The Prime Minister also welcomed the decision to stage the opening fixture of Australia's 2026-27 Big Bash League season in Chennai, describing it as another milestone in the growing cricketing partnership between the two nations.

The move is expected to further strengthen sporting exchanges and increase fan engagement across both countries. In a post on X, Modi said, "As both our nations prepare to host major global sporting events in the years ahead, there is immense potential to deepen cooperation in sports, youth engagement, infrastructure and talent development." He also expressed his delight at witnessing young players in action at the MCG, describing them as the future of the sport. The MCG visit formed part of a broader Australia tour focused on strengthening bilateral ties across trade, defence, education, technology and cultural exchanges.
Earlier during the visit, Modi held delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Albanese, met senior Australian leaders, interacted with business executives and addressed members of the Indian diaspora in Melbourne. Cricket remains one of the strongest cultural links between India and Australia, with the two countries sharing one of the sport's most celebrated rivalries. Regular bilateral series, collaboration in domestic leagues and growing exchanges in coaching and sports administration have further deepened the relationship. Modi's gesture to Steve Waugh and his emphasis on sporting cooperation reinforced the role of cricket and other sports as an important pillar of the expanding India-Australia strategic partnership.
