Amit Mishra Dowry Case: Wife Alleges Assault, Rs 10 Lakh Demand, and Suicide Attempt
Model Garima Tiwari files court complaint alleging dowry, assault, and abetment to suicide.
A 35-year-old model named Garima Tiwari has filed a complaint in a Kanpur court accusing her husband, former Indian and IPL cricketer Amit Mishra, along with his family members, of dowry harassment, physical and mental abuse, and abetment to suicide. The complaint, lodged before the Additional Civil Judge (Senior Division), names Mishra's mother Beena Mishra, father Shashikant Mishra, brother Amar Mishra, sister-in-law Ritu Mishra, and sister Swati Mishra as co-accused in the case reported on March 10, 2026.
Tiwari alleged that she and Mishra, who is currently employed as an officer with the Reserve Bank of India, met through Instagram in 2019 and maintained a relationship for nearly three years before marrying on April 26, 2021, at the Kanpur Club. Soon after the wedding, she claimed, Mishra and his in-laws began demanding additional dowry in the form of a Honda City car and Rs 10 lakh in cash. Her family reportedly arranged Rs 2.5 lakh at the time of her departure post-wedding, but the pressures for more money persisted, leading to ongoing harassment.
According to Tiwari, Mishra frequently assaulted her while intoxicated, verbally abused her, withheld food for days at times, and seized earnings from her modelling work while threatening divorce. She stated that the sustained mistreatment caused severe depression, forcing her to abandon her modelling career, and once drove her to attempt suicide by consuming phenyl, requiring hospitalisation. Tiwari further alleged that police refused to register an FIR despite multiple approaches, including to the police commissioner, attributing the inaction to Mishra's influence, prompting her to seek court intervention.

This marks the third legal action Tiwari has taken against Mishra. She previously filed a domestic violence complaint on April 21, 2025, and a maintenance petition the following day on April 23, 2025, seeking a Rs 50,000 monthly allowance and Rs 1 crore in compensation. Her counsel, Karim Ahmad Siddiqui, confirmed the latest complaint followed unsuccessful repeated efforts to secure police action, with the court expected to schedule a preliminary hearing soon.
Mishra, a right-arm leg-spinner, represented India in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is and played in the IPL for teams including the Lucknow Super Giants in recent seasons. He is known for his contributions to domestic cricket with Haryana and various franchises. The allegations have drawn attention due to his public profile, though the matter remains at the complaint stage with no formal charges or response from the accused detailed in available reports.
The case highlights ongoing issues of dowry-related harassment and domestic violence in India, where such complaints often proceed through civil or family courts when initial police registration is delayed. As proceedings advance, the court will evaluate evidence from both sides to determine next steps in this family dispute involving serious criminal allegations.
