Ahmedabad to Refurbish Current Sports Infrastructure For 2030 Commonwealth Games, Says PT Usha
Ahmedabad to upgrade existing sports venues for sustainable Commonwealth Games hosting.
India will not construct new venues for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, instead focusing on upgrading and repurposing existing infrastructure, Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha said following a review visit to Ahmedabad. The approach signals a shift toward sustainability and long-term planning, with authorities aiming to maximise the use of current facilities rather than invest in large-scale new construction projects.
A delegation from the Commonwealth Games Federation recently assessed Ahmedabad’s readiness to host the 2030 Games over a three-day visit. Officials noted that the city is positioning itself as a model for sustainable sporting events by integrating the Games into its broader urban development plans. Unlike previous host cities that required extensive new infrastructure, Ahmedabad’s strategy centres on efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Interim Commonwealth Games Federation president Donald Rukare highlighted the city’s alignment with the organisation’s “greening sport” vision. He pointed to initiatives such as the development of GIFT City, water recycling systems, green energy usage, and planned electric mobility solutions as examples of how existing frameworks can support a global sporting event without creating parallel infrastructure.

Usha emphasised that Ahmedabad already has a substantial number of venues, which will be upgraded to meet international standards. She added that any additional construction would be focused primarily on grassroots and youth development rather than short-term spectacle. The aim, she said, is to ensure that investments made for the Games continue to benefit athletes and the sporting ecosystem long after the event concludes.
The strategy is also aligned with India’s broader ambitions in global sports hosting. The country has already submitted a bid for the 2036 Olympic Games and has expressed interest in hosting the 2038 Asian Games. Authorities believe that leveraging existing infrastructure for the Commonwealth Games will strengthen India’s credibility and readiness for larger international events in the future.
Officials further underlined that current investments are part of a long-term national vision extending towards 2047. The 2030 Commonwealth Games are being viewed as a stepping stone, not only for infrastructure development but also for enhancing India’s global standing in sports governance and event management. The emphasis on sustainability, reuse, and long-term utility is expected to shape the country’s approach to hosting major sporting events in the years ahead.
