Ahmed Shehzad Tears into PCB, Blames Board's Star Player Obsession for Four ICC Failures
Shehzad blasts PCB for shielding star players as Pakistan exits four straight ICC events.
Former Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has strongly criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board, calling it the “weakest” he has seen and accusing it of blindly backing a select group of star players. His remarks come in the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing performances in recent international tournaments, including failure to reach the knockout stages in the last four ICC events.
Shehzad alleged that the board’s continued support for a small group of players has hurt the overall competitiveness of the team. He questioned whether the same set of players, who have been consistently promoted as the face of Pakistan cricket and the Pakistan Super League, are capable of delivering results on the international stage.
In his comments, Shehzad pointed out that the “calibre” of players has been overstated, arguing that their branding and visibility have not translated into match-winning performances. He expressed concern that the reliance on a limited core group has restricted opportunities for emerging talent and hindered the team’s evolution.

The former opener also criticised players for not taking responsibility during crucial moments, suggesting that accountability within the squad has been lacking. His remarks reflect growing frustration among former players and analysts over Pakistan’s recent struggles in major tournaments.
Pakistan’s underwhelming results across global competitions have intensified scrutiny on both team management and the board’s selection policies. Critics have highlighted inconsistencies in team selection, lack of long-term planning, and overdependence on certain individuals as key issues affecting performance.
Shehzad’s comments add to the ongoing debate about the direction of Pakistan cricket, with calls for structural reforms and greater accountability gaining momentum. As pressure mounts on the board and players alike, the coming months could prove crucial in determining the future course of the national team.
