A Legend is Honored! Rohit Sharma Stand Unveiled at Wankhede Stadium in Emotional Tribute

Rohit Sharma Stand Unveiled at Wankhede Stadium in Emotional Tribute

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) inaugurated the Rohit Sharma Stand at Wankhede Stadium on May 16, 2025, honoring India’s ODI captain and Mumbai Indians legend.

Located at Divecha Pavilion Level 3, the stand celebrates Rohit’s journey from a Borivali youngster to a two-time ICC title-winning captain, having led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.

The ceremony, attended by Rohit, his family, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, and Sharad Pawar, also unveiled stands for Ajit Wadekar (Grand Stand Level 4) and Pawar (Grand Stand Level 3), alongside the MCA Office Lounge for late president Amol Kale.

Rohit, visibly moved, said, “What is going to happen today, I never dreamt of… For me to have my name amongst the greats of the game… I cannot express it in words,” noting the honor’s rarity while still playing ODIs.

He joins Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Vijay Merchant with named stands at Wankhede, where he’s scored 2,543 T20 runs, mostly for Mumbai Indians, and 402 international runs. The MCA’s decision, ratified on April 15, 2025, was delayed from May 13 due to IPL 2025’s suspension amid India-Pakistan tensions.

“It’ll be a surreal feeling on the 21st when I play against Delhi Capitals,” Rohit added, anticipating his next Mumbai Indians match. The event, lauded for celebrating Rohit’s legacy, underscores Mumbai’s cricketing heritage, though some questioned the timing post his Test retirement.
