TVK Chief Vijay Insists Safety Norms Followed in Second CBI Karur Stampede Questioning
TVK chief Vijay tells CBI he followed all safety guidelines during the Karur rally that led to 41 deaths.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday for a second round of questioning in connection with the Karur stampede case, in which 41 people lost their lives during a party rally last year. Officials indicated that no clean chit has been given to him so far.
Sources said Vijay told investigators that he had followed all safety guidelines prescribed by the police for the September 27 rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district. He maintained that the event was organised in accordance with official instructions and that necessary precautions were taken ahead of his arrival.
The stampede occurred after a massive crowd gathered at the venue, with reports suggesting that Vijay’s late arrival contributed to congestion and crowd pressure. Investigators are examining allegations that he continued his address even as jostling began among attendees.

According to officials familiar with the probe, Vijay also flagged what he described as inadequate deployment of security personnel for crowd control. The CBI is assessing whether gaps in planning, crowd management, or on-ground execution played a role in triggering the deadly incident.
The federal agency took over the investigation from the Tamil Nadu Police in October following a Supreme Court directive, citing the gravity of the case. Since then, the CBI has been reconstructing the sequence of events and questioning organisers, officials, and witnesses.
Officials said further questioning may follow as the probe continues, stressing that responsibility will be fixed only after a comprehensive examination of all evidence related to the stampede.
