Shehzad Poonawalla Presses BJP to Accept Resignation In Second Letter
Poonawalla urges BJP leadership to accept his resignation again.
Shehzad Poonawalla has submitted a second resignation letter to the BJP, urging party president Nitin Nabin to formally accept his decision and relieve him of his organisational responsibilities. Poonawalla, who has resigned as the BJP’s national spokesperson, said he had reached a final decision to leave his party responsibilities and move to the private sector. He cited pressing personal and financial circumstances behind his decision.
In a letter shared on X, Poonawalla said he was grateful that the BJP leadership had initially declined to accept his resignation and had asked him to reconsider. However, after what he described as “long and hard contemplation”, he said he had decided to stand by his earlier decision. He also referred to developments involving certain individuals in recent days, saying they had reinforced his decision, but he did not name them.
Poonawalla said his move to the private sector was prompted by what he described as emergency financial and personal circumstances. At the same time, he stressed that leaving his organisational role did not mean ending his support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP. “I am only leaving the Vyavastha, not the Vyakti or Vichar,” he said, indicating that his political allegiance and ideological support would continue despite his decision to step away from active party responsibilities.

The BJP leader also expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Modi, Nitin Nabin and senior party leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP general secretary BL Santosh. Poonawalla said his decision was not motivated by resentment and thanked the party for the platform and opportunities it had provided him over the past five years. He described his association with the BJP as an important part of his political journey.
A 38-year-old lawyer-turned-politician, Poonawalla began his political career with the Congress before breaking with its leadership over issues including internal functioning and dynastic politics. He joined the BJP in late 2021 and became one of the party’s prominent national spokespersons. He was also given responsibility for the BJP’s Delhi IT and social media department and frequently represented the party during television debates, press briefings and online political discussions.
Poonawalla emerged as one of the BJP’s prominent Muslim voices and was regularly deployed to present the party’s position on contentious political issues. His latest letter comes after the BJP leadership declined to accept his first resignation and asked him to reconsider. By submitting a second request, he has now asked the party to formally relieve him of his organisational duties while maintaining that he will continue supporting Modi and the BJP’s broader vision wherever possible.
