Yogi Government Extends Housing and Health Cover to Triple Talaq and Acid Attack Victims in UP
UP government identifies triple talaq victims for housing and health insurance benefits
The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a statewide exercise to identify women affected by triple talaq and acid attacks in an effort to extend housing and health insurance benefits under various welfare schemes. The move, initiated under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, comes ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and is being viewed as a significant welfare outreach program targeting vulnerable sections of society.
Officials from the Women Welfare Department said the survey aims to ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive permanent housing assistance through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) or the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana. Authorities are also working to connect identified women and their family members with government-backed health insurance schemes, including the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and the Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
The initiative is expected to focus on women who have faced social and economic hardship following incidents of instant triple talaq or acid attacks. Officials believe that providing secure housing and healthcare coverage can help improve their quality of life and strengthen social security for families that may be struggling financially. The exercise is being carried out through local administrative and welfare networks across the state.

The welfare push comes nearly a decade after the Supreme Court's landmark 2017 judgment that declared the practice of instant triple talaq, also known as talaq-e-biddat, unconstitutional. The court described the practice as arbitrary and un-Islamic, ruling that it was not an essential part of religious practice. The verdict was later followed by legislation criminalizing the practice across the country.
Government officials have maintained that the current exercise is focused on welfare delivery and ensuring that eligible beneficiaries are not left out of existing schemes. By linking women to housing and health insurance programs, the administration aims to provide long-term support rather than one-time financial assistance. The survey is also expected to generate updated data on affected women, helping authorities improve the implementation of social welfare initiatives.
Political observers note that the program could carry electoral significance as the state moves closer to the 2027 Assembly elections. While the government has presented the exercise as a social welfare measure, the initiative is likely to draw attention from both supporters and critics who may view it through a political lens. For now, officials say the priority remains identifying eligible women and ensuring they receive the benefits available under state and central government schemes.
