Yogi Announces Umbrellas Over Every Ambedkar Statue in UP — a Dalit Signal Before 2027 Polls

The Bharatiya Janata Party has intensified its outreach to Dalit communities ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announcing a state-wide initiative to install protective “chattra” (umbrellas) over statues of B. R. Ambedkar. The announcement was made on the party’s Foundation Day, signalling a renewed focus on social outreach and symbolic recognition. The move is seen as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the party’s connect with key voter groups. It also highlights the growing importance of identity-based outreach in electoral politics.

Addressing party workers at a function in Gorakhpur, Adityanath said the government has decided to cover all Ambedkar statues across the state with protective structures. He described Ambedkar as the architect of the Indian Constitution and emphasised the need to preserve and honour his legacy. The Chief Minister also hoisted the party flag during the Foundation Day celebrations. His remarks underscored the government’s commitment to recognising influential social reformers. The initiative is expected to be implemented across districts in a phased manner.

The outreach effort is not limited to Ambedkar alone, with the Chief Minister stating that similar initiatives would be undertaken at sites associated with other prominent figures.
