Yogi Adityanath Urges SP And Congress To Apologise For Opposing Women’s Reservation Bill

Yogi Adityanath criticises SP and Congress for not supporting Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday addressed reporters ahead of a special one-day session of the state assembly, focusing on the Women’s Reservation Bill. He said the session would include a detailed discussion on the constitutional amendment brought by the Narendra Modi-led government in the Lok Sabha. The Chief Minister alleged that certain opposition parties had opposed the bill at the national level. He framed the discussion as an opportunity to clarify political positions on women’s representation in governance.

Adityanath specifically targeted the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, urging them to explain their stand during the assembly debate. He said that if they had “moral courage,” they should participate in the discussion and justify why they did not support the Constitution Amendment Bill. According to him, their opposition in Parliament had delayed the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Law. He also suggested that the session should be used to place their stance on record.

The Chief Minister further escalated his remarks by stating that if opposition leaders felt their earlier position was wrong, they should publicly apologise. He also said they could support a condemnation motion that the state government planned to introduce during the special session. Adityanath argued that such a step would help correct what he described as a political mistake regarding women’s empowerment. He maintained that accountability was necessary on such a significant legislative issue.

Launching a sharp attack on the Samajwadi Party, Adityanath accused it of being “habitually anti-women” and said its governance record had raised concerns about women’s safety. He claimed that negative public perceptions about the party’s approach toward women had persisted over time. He also extended criticism to the Congress, saying both parties had failed to support an important reform opportunity. According to him, backing the Women’s Reservation Bill could have helped improve their political image.

He further alleged that the Samajwadi Party, Congress, and the INDIA bloc were deliberately trying to obstruct the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Amendment Act. The Chief Minister said their collective stance reflected resistance to increasing women’s political representation. He added that the state government would use the assembly session to highlight this opposition. The discussion, he said, was part of a broader political narrative ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The special assembly session is expected to be politically charged, with the state government moving a condemnation motion against opposition parties. The ruling side aims to project the opposition as being against women-centric reforms, while the opposition has strongly rejected these allegations. Both sides are preparing for an intense debate over the Bill’s passage and its political implications. The session is being seen as an important stage for setting the tone ahead of upcoming elections.
