UP CM Yogi Targets Congress, SP Over Waqf Land Row
Yogi Adityanath criticises Congress, SP over silence on Waqf land issue.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, accusing the Opposition parties of remaining silent over the alleged illegal sale and encroachment of Waqf land while raising questions about Hindu faith in connection with the Ayodhya Ram temple donation controversy. Adityanath asked why their “mouths get sealed with Fevicol” when issues related to alleged irregularities involving Waqf properties are raised.
The Chief Minister’s remarks came as the Bharatiya Janata Party governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh face criticism over allegations concerning the theft of donations linked to the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Opposition parties have sought to portray the controversy as an assault on the faith and sentiments of Hindus, increasing political pressure on the state government and prompting demands for accountability over the handling of the donations.
Adityanath sought to counter the criticism by questioning what he described as the selective approach of the Congress and the Samajwadi Party towards matters involving religious institutions and properties. He accused the two parties of speaking forcefully about the Ayodhya controversy while allegedly failing to raise similar concerns over the illegal sale or encroachment of Waqf land. His “Fevicol” remark was aimed at highlighting what he claimed was the Opposition’s silence on the issue.

The Uttar Pradesh government has already ordered a Special Investigation Team probe into the allegations surrounding the Ram temple donations. Adityanath has repeatedly responded to Opposition attacks by accusing rival parties of practising Muslim appeasement and adopting different political standards depending on the religious community involved. The latest remarks continued that line of attack as the controversy remained at the centre of political debate in the state.
The Opposition, meanwhile, has focused its criticism on the alleged theft of donations and has argued that any irregularity involving money offered by devotees must be investigated thoroughly. By linking the issue to the faith of Hindus, opposition parties have attempted to challenge the BJP on a subject that has long remained central to its political narrative. The controversy has therefore developed into a wider confrontation between the ruling party and its rivals over religious faith, accountability and the management of religious properties.
Adityanath’s remarks are likely to intensify the political exchange between the BJP and the Opposition in Uttar Pradesh. While the state government points to the SIT investigation as evidence that the allegations are being examined, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party continue to target the ruling establishment over the donation controversy. The Chief Minister’s reference to Waqf properties has now added another dimension to the dispute, shifting part of the political debate towards allegations of selective outrage and appeasement.
