Yogi Adityanath Criticises Opposition Over Secularism, Urges Stronger Bharat

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday criticised opposition parties, particularly the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP), accusing them of practising what he described as “appeasement politics” during their periods in power. Addressing a public gathering in Barabanki, the Chief Minister called for moving away from what he termed “fake secularism” and advocated building a stronger India based on the principles of Sanatan Dharma.

The remarks were made during the inauguration and foundation-laying ceremony of 82 development projects worth more than Rs 542 crore in Barabanki. Speaking at the event, Yogi Adityanath alleged that earlier governments had prioritised certain community-related works while neglecting religious and cultural heritage sites. He claimed that restrictions on religious processions and celebrations under previous administrations were presented as examples of secularism.

The Chief Minister highlighted Barabanki’s historical and cultural significance, referring to landmarks associated with Lord Lodheshwar Mahadev, the Parijat tree and hockey legend K.D. Singh ‘Babu’. He said these symbols of heritage had not received adequate attention for many years after independence. Yogi Adityanath claimed that while funds were available for construction of cemetery boundary walls under earlier governments, similar support was not extended to the development of important cultural and religious sites.

Yogi Adityanath said his government had redirected resources towards the development of religious tourism and heritage conservation. He mentioned the construction of a grand corridor for the Lord Lodheshwar Mahadev Temple as an initiative aimed at improving facilities for devotees and boosting tourism in the region. He also said efforts were being made to preserve the residence and legacy of hockey player K.D. Singh ‘Babu’, which he claimed was earlier at risk of being sold.

The Chief Minister further stated that India’s heritage and Sanatan culture represent the country’s identity and said the nation’s future depends on protecting these traditions. He accused previous Congress and SP governments of failing to support places of religious and historical importance, including sites linked with Ayodhya, Kashi Vishwanath Dham, Mahadeva, Gola Gokarnnath, Maharaja Suheldev and Bijli Pasi.

Yogi Adityanath said his administration has worked to ensure that festivals and religious events are conducted with dignity and security across Uttar Pradesh. His comments are expected to draw political reactions from opposition parties, who have frequently challenged the BJP government’s approach towards religion, culture and governance.
