Wolf Supermoon on January 3 Marks Last Supermoon in Rare Four-Moon Streak
The first full moon of 2026, a rare Wolf Supermoon, will shine brightly over India on January 3.
The first full moon of 2026, known as the Wolf Moon, will be a supermoon peaking on January 3 at approximately 3:33 PM IST (10:03 UTC). This event marks the final supermoon in a sequence of four consecutive ones that began in October 2025. A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth (perigee), making it appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. The name "Wolf Moon" originates from Native American and European folklore, referring to wolves howling more frequently during the cold winter nights.
In India, the exact full phase happens in the afternoon when the moon is below the horizon, so it won't be visible then. The best viewing opportunities are on the evenings of January 2 and 3, shortly after sunset (around 5:45–6:00 PM IST, depending on your location), when the moon rises in the eastern sky. Look toward a clear eastern horizon for the most impressive sight. The "moon illusion" makes it appear even larger when low on the horizon, and atmospheric scattering often gives it an orange hue as light passes through more of Earth's atmosphere.
No special equipment is needed—enjoy the supermoon with the naked eye. For better details like craters, use binoculars or a telescope during the gibbous phase. Smartphone photography works well with 5x optical zoom and a tripod to capture the rising moon's orange glow. Find a spot away from city lights for optimal viewing.

This supermoon coincides with the peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower (January 2–3 nights), known for bright fireballs. However, the full moon's glare will obscure fainter meteors, so only the brightest ones may be visible from midnight to dawn. Jupiter will appear near the moon on January 3, adding to the spectacle, while Saturn may be visible in the southwest at moonrise.
The Wolf Supermoon offers a stunning start to 2026's celestial events. Clear skies will provide breathtaking views across India, especially in rural or elevated areas with minimal light pollution. Stay warm and enjoy this rare combination of lunar brilliance and potential meteor sightings!
