Why Yogi Adityanath Remains BJP's Trump Card Despite Caste, Youth Unease
Yogi Adityanath's popularity faces test from caste and job concerns.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remains the Bharatiya Janata Party’s central electoral asset in the state ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, despite concerns within sections of the party over youth dissatisfaction, unemployment and growing caste tensions. With around five months to go before the high-stakes polls, the BJP is working to maintain a positive narrative around the government, while Adityanath has stepped up his outreach across different regions of the state.
The two-term chief minister’s popularity is considered largely intact within the party, even as internal differences and governance-related concerns remain. Adityanath has focused on employment and youth-oriented initiatives to counter criticism over job opportunities. Earlier this month, he launched the Uttar Pradesh Corporation for Outsourcing Services to protect the interests of around 3.5 lakh outsourced employees and their families.
The state government has also announced plans to distribute appointment letters to one lakh young people over six months. Adityanath has claimed that more than 9.3 lakh jobs have been provided during his government’s nine-and-a-half-year tenure. Other measures include recruitment drives for police and teachers, entrepreneurship support under the Mukhyamantri Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan, stipend-backed internships and centralised family cards aimed at identifying households without members employed in either the government or private sector.

However, caste divisions and socio-political friction pose significant challenges for the BJP. Party leaders have pointed to concerns among OBC groups that the BJP is increasingly being perceived as an upper-caste party, while divisions between Thakur and Brahmin communities have also emerged as an internal concern. Under-employment, examination-related controversies and frustration among young people over alleged irregularities in recruitment and education systems are adding to the party’s difficulties.
Despite these concerns, the BJP continues to rely on Adityanath’s image on law and order and his support among women voters. Meanwhile, the Opposition faces its own hurdles. The Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, and the Congress, which is seeking to expand its appeal among minorities and youth under Rahul Gandhi, may struggle to reach a smooth seat-sharing agreement. Rahul Gandhi’s push for a caste census and greater reservation has further intensified the BJP’s efforts to retain its OBC base, which accounts for more than 40 per cent of Uttar Pradesh’s population.
The SP’s PDA strategy, focusing on backward classes, Dalits and minorities, could strengthen the Opposition’s prospects, but differences between the two allies remain a major obstacle. The SP’s stronger position after winning 37 Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 elections, compared with the BJP’s 33, may make negotiations more difficult. While the Congress could seek a larger share of seats due to its minority support, it may still depend on the SP to navigate Uttar Pradesh’s complex OBC politics, leaving the BJP with an opportunity to exploit divisions within the Opposition.
