What Triggered The TVK-DMK Horse-Trading Row? A Look At CM Vijay's Political Challenge

CM Vijay faces scrutiny amid TVK-DMK horse-trading controversy.

A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after allegations of "horse-trading" surfaced, with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Chief Minister Vijay, accusing the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of attempting to lure its legislators and destabilise the government. The DMK has denied the allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated and levelling counter-charges against the ruling party.

The row began after TVK MLA N. Elaiyaraja lodged a police complaint on June 29, alleging that he had been approached with a lucrative offer to influence his vote in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. According to the complaint, a man identified as Thirunavukkarasu contacted him, claiming to represent Indian Political Democratic Strategies (IPDS) and stating that he was acting on behalf of members of a major political party.

Elaiyaraja alleged that he was asked to vote in a particular manner during a proposed resolution against the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He further claimed that he was offered up to ₹35 crore as an inducement in exchange for his support. The allegations have intensified concerns over alleged attempts to influence elected representatives and have triggered a criminal investigation.

Police have since arrested three individuals in connection with the case as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged offer, including the identities of those involved and whether any larger conspiracy to influence legislative proceedings existed. Officials have not publicly disclosed further details as the investigation continues.

The allegations have fuelled a war of words between the TVK and the DMK, with the ruling party claiming the episode reflects an attempt to weaken its government by engineering defections. The DMK, however, has strongly denied any involvement, accusing the TVK of making baseless claims for political gain and attempting to divert attention from governance issues.

The controversy has reignited debate over political defections and alleged attempts to influence legislators in state politics. While the TVK has projected the episode as an effort to destabilise its administration, there is currently no official indication that the government faces an immediate threat. The outcome of the police investigation is expected to play a key role in determining the veracity of the allegations and any subsequent legal or political action.
