West Bengal Government Prepares Cabinet Expansion Following Central BJP Approval
West Bengal cabinet expansion expected after BJP central approval process.
The West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is expected to carry out a cabinet expansion soon after receiving approval from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s central leadership. The move comes more than two weeks after the formation of the new government following the BJP’s decisive victory in the Assembly elections, where it secured 208 seats. Party insiders said the expansion aims to complete the administrative structure and bring greater balance to governance in the state.
When the new government was sworn in on May 9 at the Brigade Parade Ground, only five ministers were inducted along with the Chief Minister. The initial cabinet included Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Khudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik. Several key portfolios were left vacant at the time, with the Chief Minister assigning interim responsibilities to the existing ministers. This arrangement was intended to ensure continuity of governance while allowing the leadership time to finalise a more comprehensive cabinet structure.
During the early days of the government, the administration focused on launching key welfare and governance initiatives rather than immediate cabinet expansion. Programs such as the ‘Annapurna Bhandar’ scheme, implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health programme, revival of the 100-day rural employment scheme (MGNREGA), and measures to improve transparency in recruitment processes were prioritised. Officials also emphasised a strong stance on corruption control and law-and-order reforms as part of the new government’s agenda.

Sources within the party indicated that several senior leaders are being considered for ministerial positions in the expanded cabinet. Among those reportedly under consideration are Tapas Roy, Swapan Dasgupta, Shankar Ghosh, and Sharadwat Mukherjee. The selection process is said to be based on multiple factors, including administrative capability, regional representation across North and South Bengal, and the state’s social and caste composition. Party leaders believe these considerations are essential for ensuring balanced governance and political stability.
The initial group of five ministers has been handling multiple departments on an interim basis, which officials say has placed significant pressure on the small cabinet structure. With the expansion, responsibilities are expected to be redistributed to improve efficiency and streamline decision-making. The Chief Minister is also likely to retain key portfolios, including Home, to maintain direct oversight over critical administrative functions. Party insiders say this phased approach has been designed to ensure stability during the early stages of governance.
However, the large electoral mandate has also created internal pressure within the party, with a significant number of MLAs expecting ministerial representation. Leaders acknowledge that not all aspirants can be accommodated in the cabinet, prompting the party to explore alternative organisational and administrative roles for senior members. As the final list awaits central approval, the cabinet expansion is expected to mark an important step in the consolidation of the BJP’s first full-fledged government in West Bengal.
