Vijay’s Tribute to Velupillai Prabhakaran Ignites Political Debate in Tamil Nadu

A political controversy has emerged after TN Chief Minister, C Joseph Vijay, paid tribute to former Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Chief Velupillai Prabhakaran on Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, triggering renewed debate over the legacy of the Sri Lankan civil war and its political sensitivities in India.

Posting on X, Vijay expressed solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamil communities and said the memories of Mullivaikkal would be carried in collective remembrance. He also reiterated support for the rights and dignity of Tamils living across national boundaries. The post quickly gained attention due to its reference to an emotionally and politically sensitive chapter in South Asian history, drawing both support and criticism across political circles.

Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day is observed annually by Sri Lankan Tamils worldwide to commemorate the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. The period marks the culmination of decades of armed conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE. For many in the Tamil diaspora, the day is associated with remembrance of civilian suffering and the humanitarian impact of the final battles fought in the northern parts of Sri Lanka.

According to estimates cited by the United Nations, between 40,000 and 70,000 Tamil civilians were killed during the final stages of the war, with thousands more reported injured or missing. These figures have remained central to international discussions on accountability, human rights, and reconciliation in Sri Lanka. Mullivaikkal has since become a symbolic reference point for advocacy groups seeking recognition of wartime losses and alleged atrocities.

In India, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam remains a banned organisation due to its involvement in the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, a major Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The killing led to widespread condemnation and resulted in the LTTE being proscribed under Indian law. Velupillai Prabhakaran, the organisation’s founder, was named the principal accused in the investigation, making any public reference or tribute to him politically sensitive within India’s domestic political discourse.

Supporters of Vijay have defended his remarks, arguing that his statement was focused on acknowledging the suffering of Sri Lankan Tamils rather than endorsing militancy or the LTTE’s methods. The issue has once again highlighted the complex intersection of Tamil identity politics, historical memory, and cross-border ethnic solidarity. Vijay has previously referenced Prabhakaran in speeches, including remarks in Nagapattinam in 2025, where he spoke about the emotional and cultural ties between Tamil communities across the region.
