Vijayan Criticises Satheesan Government Over Kerala Flood Situation Amid Messi Row

Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday criticised the V.D. Satheesan-led government over its handling of the recent rain and flood situation, questioning both the administration's disaster response and its sensitivity towards affected families. At a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayan argued that the government's response should extend beyond administrative measures to addressing the emotional and humanitarian needs of people who lost homes and loved ones.

Vijayan particularly questioned the reported delay in ministers visiting families grieving after the disaster. He maintained that it was unacceptable for ministers to take more than 10 days to visit affected households and suggested that such delays reflected a lack of understanding of the emotional dimensions of a crisis. He also argued that relief and rehabilitation should not be confined to government files, meetings and announcements while families continue to cope with their losses.

The former Chief Minister's criticism also carries a political context, given that his own administration faced scrutiny over its response to earlier disasters. During the 2017 Ockhi cyclone, which severely affected Kerala's coastal areas, Vijayan faced criticism over the timing of his visit to affected regions. Families of fishermen who went missing during the cyclone had sought information and assistance, with the episode becoming a point of political criticism against his government.

The press conference also briefly touched on the ongoing controversy surrounding football star Lionel Messi. When questioned about the Messi-related episode, Vijayan gave a brief response and maintained that there was nothing wrong with the matter. He did not elaborate further or turn the issue into a broader political argument before moving on.

Vijayan's regular interactions with the media have become more frequent since he moved out of government and took on a prominent opposition role. During his decade in office as Chief Minister, he was known for relatively infrequent media interactions, while he has since begun addressing the press at least once a week and sometimes more frequently.

His latest remarks put the flood response of the Satheesan government under renewed political scrutiny as Kerala deals with the aftermath of rain-related incidents. While Vijayan focused on the timing of ministerial visits and the need for a more sensitive approach to affected families, the government will face pressure to demonstrate that relief, rehabilitation and administrative support are reaching those affected by the disaster.
