Vijay Promises Tamil Nadu MLAs Cars, ₹1 Lakh Monthly Allowance Ahead Of Election Battle

Vijay offers MLAs cars and allowance.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced that all 234 members of the state Legislative Assembly will be provided with government vehicles along with an allowance for fuel and maintenance expenses. The move is aimed at helping legislators travel to their constituencies and carry out public-facing responsibilities, according to the government. Vijay made the announcement in the Assembly while explaining the need for logistical support for elected representatives. The government said MLAs frequently need to travel within their constituencies to meet residents, address grievances and oversee local issues. Providing official vehicles, it said, would make such work easier and support more transparent administration.

"MLAs need to travel to their constituencies frequently to address people's problems. Government vehicle will ensure transparent and corruption free governance," Vijay said while announcing the measure. The government also proposed financial support towards fuel and maintenance costs associated with the vehicles. The announcement came after VCK MLA Jothimani raised concerns over the logistical difficulties faced by legislators. She argued that MLAs could not work effectively without adequate logistical facilities and requested that cars be provided to them. The demand subsequently became part of the discussion surrounding the support required by members of the Assembly to carry out their constituency duties.

The Tamil Nadu government also pointed to the composition of the current Assembly while justifying the decision. It said several MLAs have been elected for the first time and come from modest backgrounds. According to Vijay, providing government vehicles would help such legislators meet the demands of their public responsibilities without having to bear the full cost of transportation themselves. The proposed facility is intended primarily to support constituency-related travel rather than provide a personal benefit, according to the government's explanation. MLAs often need to move between different parts of their constituencies, attend public meetings and respond to local issues.

The government has presented the vehicle provision as an administrative support measure for these responsibilities. The announcement also includes an allowance of ₹1 lakh for fuel and maintenance expenses, according to the details provided. The move means that the state's entire strength of 234 MLAs would be covered by the new arrangement. The government has not, in the information available, provided further details on the vehicle models, procurement process or the precise structure of the allowance. The decision is expected to attract attention because of the scale of the expenditure involved and the fact that the benefit will extend to every sitting MLA.

However, the government has framed the measure around the practical requirements of constituency work and the need to ensure that elected representatives have adequate resources to engage with voters. Vijay's announcement follows the demand raised inside the Assembly for better logistical support for legislators. With the government now proposing vehicles and financial assistance for running and maintaining them, the measure marks a significant expansion of facilities available to Tamil Nadu MLAs and is intended to help them carry out their responsibilities across the state.
