Vijay Promises Monthly Constituency Visits to Silence 'Work-From-Home Politician' Critics

TVK chief Vijay pledges monthly visits amid opposition's growing inaccessibility criticism

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has assured voters that he will remain accessible to the public amid ongoing criticism from opposition parties over his alleged inaccessibility. The actor-turned-politician, who is contesting from Perambur and Trichy East in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, made the remarks while releasing his party’s election manifesto and addressing campaign meetings in the state. His comments come as he faces repeated political attacks branding him a “work-from-home politician” since the launch of his party in 2024.

Responding directly to the criticism, Vijay said that both Perambur and Trichy East hold special significance for him and promised that he would maintain regular contact with voters. He assured constituents that he would visit his constituencies at least once every month and emphasized that people would be able to meet him without difficulty. His statement was aimed at countering the narrative that he remains distant from grassroots-level engagement.

During his speech, Vijay said that his party intends to ensure representation across all constituencies in Tamil Nadu, while also stressing his personal commitment as a candidate in the seats he is contesting. He expressed confidence that TVK would form the government after the elections and reiterated that accessibility would remain a key part of his leadership style. His remarks were made in the context of growing political competition ahead of the polls scheduled later this month.

Opposition parties, particularly the ruling DMK, have previously targeted Vijay over his campaign style and public outreach methods. DMK leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, have indirectly criticised his approach by highlighting the importance of direct interaction with constituents. Critics have also questioned his limited public engagement, including earlier incidents where supporters were asked to travel to Chennai to meet him, which further fuelled the accessibility debate.

TVK, however, has defended Vijay in such instances, stating that administrative restrictions and permission issues had prevented certain visits, including a reported incident in Karur. The party has maintained that its leader is committed to public service and engagement, while opposition parties continue to highlight accessibility as a key electoral issue in their campaigns against him.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections for all 234 constituencies are scheduled to be held on April 23, with vote counting set for May 4. As campaigning intensifies, Vijay’s assurances on accessibility are expected to remain a focal point in the political narrative, with both ruling and opposition parties seeking to influence voter perception in closely contested constituencies.
