Vijay Announces Loan Waivers, Educational Support, And Ration Reforms At Thanjavur Campaign Event
TVK’s Vijay pledges farm loan waivers, educational support, and improved public services at Thanjavur campaign event.
Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay appealed to party supporters on Wednesday to give him a chance to form a government in Tamil Nadu, unveiling a fresh set of election promises at an executive meeting and campaign program in Chengipatti, Thanjavur district. Speaking to TVK executives and campaign volunteers, Vijay emphasised his commitment to establishing a corruption-free and socially just administration.
“This relationship with the people is not something that came for the sake of elections. It happened naturally. For some, politics may be a choice during elections, but for me and those who support me, it is deeply emotional,” Vijay said during his address. The meeting marked the second phase of the party’s election promises, following an earlier announcement in Vellore.
A major highlight of the announcements was a plan to provide relief to farmers. Vijay said that if TVK forms the government, crop loans taken by farmers owning up to five acres of land from cooperative agricultural banks would be completely waived. For farmers with more than five acres, the party would consider waiving up to 50 percent of crop loans. He also assured that delta farmers would never face a shortage of fertilisers and that his government would oppose any scheme that harms farmers, even under pressure from the Union government.

In addition to farm relief, Vijay promised that the government would cover the entire educational expenses of children from landless families and farmers owning up to two acres of land, provided no family member is employed in the state or Central government. He also highlighted measures to improve agricultural procurement, including proper storage of paddy at procurement centres to prevent wastage and strict action against illegal commissions collected for loading or unloading paddy bags.
Vijay outlined plans to improve the public distribution system, including limiting one ration shop for every 500 ration cards and appointing assistants in villages to support ration shop operations. All commodities except rice would be distributed in packaged form. He also pledged that a TVK government would press the Union government for legal protection for fishermen and prioritise essential services such as education, healthcare, drinking water, roads, bus facilities, and ration distribution, with special focus on women, children, and youth.
Reflecting on his personal connection to the farming community, Vijay said that if he were born again, he would choose to be born into a farmer’s family. Though he acknowledged his own lack of farming experience, he said his roots in the Cauvery Delta region gave him a deep bond with farmers. The event was held under strict police regulations, with 4,900 participants allowed entry using QR-coded passes. Vijay arrived in Tiruchirappalli by private aircraft from Chennai and traveled by road to the venue, receiving a warm welcome from TVK executives and volunteers along the way.
